Personal Umbrella / Excess Liability Insurance

Note that most standard policies limit the amount of coverage they pay. That's why many of our clients purchase an affordable personal umbrella policy, which protects against a loss due to catastrophic lawsuits. It offers additional protection beyond your standard homeowners and helps to eliminate gaps in your liability coverage on covered policies.

A personal umbrella policy protects you, your spouse and all other relatives living in your household for usually up to $1 million, though limits up to $10 million (or more) are available. This means you can help to safeguard your possessions, your savings, and your future earnings. You can usually purchase a $1 million personal umbrella policy for $150 to $300 per year. Additional coverage will typically cost between $50 to $100 for every million after that.

Personal Umbrella includes:

• Protection over and above your basic liability policies for homeowners, automobile, boat owners, renters, or motor homes (must be listed on your policy) . Personal umbrella liability insurance usually carries a high deductible of $300,000 or more. This means that you need to maintain minimum underlying minimum limits (varies by company) to cover this deductible.
• Personal injury coverage you will be protected if suits are brought against you for libel, slander, humiliation, false arrest, false imprisonment, defamation of character, wrongful eviction, wrongful detention, malicious prosecution or invasion of privacy.
• Any additional defense costs not covered under your other liability policies.
• Plus a few Personal Umbrella insurers even offer coverage (at additional cost) for bodily injury to you, your covered family members and occupants of your vehicle if you suffer injuries from an uninsured or underinsured motorist (even if injured as a pedestrian).

Personal Umbrellas do not extend coverage over any business or commercial exposure but can provide coverage for certain non remunerative positions.
